Planning a Wood Deck in Phoenix: A Homeowner's Guide

Wood is still the most natural-looking deck you can build, and the least expensive to start. In this climate it rewards good planning and regular care.

Choosing the wood

  • Pressure-treated pine: The most affordable option and the standard for framing. As decking it needs sealing and will show some checking as it dries.
  • Cedar and redwood: Naturally resistant to rot and insects, more stable, and beautiful. They cost more and still need a UV-protecting finish.
  • Tropical hardwoods: Very dense and long-lasting, with a price and installation effort to match.

Whichever you choose, the finish matters as much as the species. Sun, not rain, is what wears wood out here.

Timeline

  • Design and quote: 2–4 weeks.
  • Permit review: 4–8 weeks, sometimes more.
  • Materials: 1–3 weeks.
  • Construction: 2–4 weeks.
  • Final inspection and cleanup: About a week.

Three to five months from first call to finished deck is realistic.

During the build

Expect site preparation, concrete footings, framing, then decking, railings and stairs, with city inspections at set points where a permit applies. The finish goes on once the wood has dried enough to take it. There will be noise, and a tidy crew will keep the mess contained.

Getting ready

Clear the area, make sure the crew can reach the backyard, point out sprinkler and lighting lines, keep pets and children away from the work, and stay reachable for the occasional quick decision.
