In Scottsdale the view is often the reason for the deck. We plan heights, steps and railings so you see the mountains and the sunset, not a wall of balusters. Cable and slim metal railings are a good fit.

Sloped and desert lots need careful footings and framing. We'll look at the ground and tell you what the structure needs before we quote.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from Scottsdale homeowners.

Composite decking is the most popular choice in Scottsdale because it resists fading, warping and insects and never needs staining. Pressure-treated lumber is the most affordable option and holds up well when it is kept sealed. Cedar and redwood look beautiful and resist rot naturally, and dense hardwoods such as ipe last longest of all.

For decks with a view, pair the decking with cable or slim metal railings so the scenery stays in sight.

Most new decks and major changes to an existing one need a building permit from the City of Scottsdale, particularly when the deck is attached to the house, is more than about 30 inches off the ground or has a roof. The review checks structural strength, footings, railing height and how far the deck sits from property lines.

Low freestanding platforms are sometimes exempt, and rules change, so we check Scottsdale's current requirements for your design before work starts and tell you what is needed. If you live in an HOA community, its approval is separate from the city's.

Once we start building, most decks in Scottsdale take two to four weeks. That covers site preparation, concrete footings, framing, decking, and railings and stairs. Smaller, simpler decks are quicker; multi-level designs and custom features take longer.

Planning and permit review come before that and can add several weeks. Hillside lots and multi-level designs take longer at every stage.

Yes. Raised and multi-level decks are a good way to get flat, usable space on a slope. The footings and frame are designed for the site, and taller decks need guardrails and usually a permit.
