A gray Trex-style deck with matching railings and steps on a desert lot

Trex® is the brand many people mean when they say composite decking. The boards are made largely from recycled material, they don't rot or splinter, and they hold their color without stain or paint.

Trex comes in several product lines at different prices, with different colors and warranty lengths. We'll show you the range, explain what the extra money buys, and help you pick the line that fits your deck and budget.

How it's installed matters as much as what you buy. We follow Trex's requirements for joist spacing, gapping and fasteners, so your deck performs as it should and the manufacturer's warranty applies.

What's included

  • Framing and spacing to Trex's installation requirements

Frequently asked questions

Trex Decks: what people ask.

A very long time. Trex boards do not rot, warp or get eaten by termites, which are the usual ways a wood deck fails in the desert. Trex backs its decking with limited residential warranties of 25 years or more, depending on the product line, covering material defects and fading and staining.

With regular cleaning, a Trex deck keeps its looks and its strength through decades of sun and monsoon storms.

It gets warm in direct sun, as every decking material does. Lighter Trex colors stay cooler than dark ones, which absorb more sunlight, so we usually recommend lighter shades here.

Shade makes the biggest difference. Placing the deck where it gets afternoon shade, or adding a pergola over it, keeps it comfortable on the hottest days.

To buy and install, yes. It costs more than a pressure-treated wood deck. Over time it often works out cheaper, because there is no stain, sealer or paint to buy and apply every couple of years.

When you add up the cost and labor of maintaining wood, Trex usually gives better value over the life of the deck. Our quote shows the breakdown so you can compare clearly.

Just cleaning. Soap and water is normally all it takes to remove dirt, dust and pollen. A pressure washer on a low setting can be used for a deeper clean. You never need to sand, stain or seal it.

Trex makes several lines at different prices. The entry lines are the most affordable. The premium lines have a more detailed, more durable cap, richer colors and longer warranties. We show you samples of each, explain what the extra money buys, and help you pick the one that suits your deck and budget.

Sometimes. The frame has to be sound and the joists spaced closely enough to meet Trex's installation requirements. We inspect it first and tell you plainly whether it can be reused.
