Nothing looks or feels quite like real wood. It's also the most affordable way to get a full-size deck, and it can be sanded and refinished years later instead of replaced.

The trade-off is care. Arizona sun dries wood out, so the species, the fasteners and above all the finish decide how long a wood deck stays good. We build with pressure-treated framing and help you choose decking boards that suit your budget, from treated pine to redwood, cedar or hardwood.

Every wood deck we build is finished with a UV-resistant stain or sealer, and we'll tell you honestly how often it will need redoing.

What's included

  • Help choosing the wood for your budget
  • Pressure-treated framing and corrosion-resistant fasteners
  • Stairs and railings to match
  • Stain or sealer applied after the build
  • A simple care schedule for your deck

Frequently asked questions

Wooden Decks: what people ask.

Pressure-treated pine, cedar and redwood are the common choices. Pressure-treated pine is the most affordable and very durable, which is why it is used for nearly all framing. Cedar and redwood are more stable, resist rot and insects naturally, and have a richer look. Tropical hardwoods are the longest-lasting and the most expensive.

What matters as much as the species is how the wood stands up to strong UV and dry heat. Every wood deck here needs a good finish and regular care to stay looking good.

A standard wood deck usually takes one to three weeks to build. Smaller, simpler decks are quicker. Larger or multi-level designs with stairs and railings take longer. Permit review, where one is needed, happens before building starts and adds time to the overall project.

We give you a more exact timeline once we have measured the site and agreed the design.

Generally yes when the deck is attached to the house or is more than about 30 inches above the ground next to it. The permit process checks that the deck meets the building code for safety and structural strength, including footings, the connection to the house and railing height.

Requirements vary by city. We confirm what applies to your project before any work begins.

Clean it once a year to remove dirt and anything growing on it. Then apply a good UV-resistant sealer or stain every one to three years. The timing depends on the product and how much direct sun the deck gets; south- and west-facing decks need attention sooner.

That finish is what stops the wood fading, cracking and warping in dry heat. Keep standing water off the deck, fix small problems promptly, and it will last many years.

Some small surface cracks, called checking, are normal as wood dries out. They are cosmetic. Serious warping and splitting come from poor board spacing, the wrong fasteners or a finish that was allowed to fail.

Built properly and kept sealed, a wood deck stays flat and sound. If you would rather not think about sealing at all, composite is the better fit.

At the start, usually yes. Over the years the cost of stain, sealer and the time to apply them narrows the gap. If you enjoy looking after wood and love the look, it is good value. If you want to spend weekends on the deck rather than working on it, composite often costs less in the long run.
